The Discmania Combine goes north of the border to Vancouver, British Colombia, Canada in only our 2nd combine event of the 2023 season. This was an opportunity for a fresh new group of 18 players from the Northwest a chance to make Team Discmania!
Scouting Vancouver, BC
This was our second Discmania Combine event that we've hosted in Canada (Toronto in 2022) and our third international combine event since our visit to Nokia, Finland in 2017. I last visited Vancouver 20-years ago when I won the 2003 Canadian National Championships, so I was excited to return as it’s been too long.
This particular event had 10-States & 2 Provinces that were in attendance and this showed a great amount of international diversity with talent from all over the region. A lot of newer players were participating along with a few veterans. This was the time to shine, outperform the competition and showcase their throwing skills under pressure.
As much as the previous event St. Louis was an absolute scorcher, this event in Vancouver had some cool rain and wind to make things interesting for the players.

Event Highlights
Some of the highlights from the combine event was the performance by the 53-year old Sergio Celis as he put on a showcase display of his overall skills placing in the Top-4 in all four throwing disciplines, a recipe for success. 15-year old Asher Weideman averaged 465 ft in the long drive and finished 5th at the 2023 Junior Disc Golf World Championships.
Also there was excitement on the distance field by Julian Celis of Tucson, AZ who unleashed some bombs with his longest drive measuring at 527 ft and overall averaged 481.5 ft in the contest. Although, I feel that he might have thrown a few shots further in warm-ups, he’s an absolute crusher!
Asher Weideman also dominated the field in the round of golf with a 1043-rated 52 (-12) at the legendary Raptors Knoll Disc Golf Course which currently ranks 2nd throughout Canada. An absolutely incredible venue for this year’s Discmania Combine Event!

What's Next?
The next stage for these qualified players is the interview process as we’ll go through a series of questions to determine the player’s goals & aspirations within the sport and what we as Discmania can do to best support that. New Team Discmania Players will be added from these Discmania Combine Events.
An amazing season overall, the 2024 Discmania Combine Combine Event Schedule will be posted in the spring, so stay tuned!
