Last week’s United States Disc Golf Championship marked the start of three straight weekends of disc golf at the highest level. With the final PDGA National Tour event this weekend in Appling, Georgia ahead of the Disc Golf Pro Tour’s finale in Florida in two weeks, there is no rest for the weary.
Team Discmania’s Eagle McMahon battled hard at the USDGC before finishing in sixth place and is ready to continue the grind.
While McMahon travels to Georgia, he is also able to celebrate two milestones. The recent update to the PDGA ratings sent McMahon’s rating to 1048 which ties him for the highest rating in the world with Paul McBeth.
In addition to the rating milestone, McMahon also reached $100,000 in career earnings.
Looking back at Rock Hill
Before shifting his focus to the next tournaments, we talked with McMahon about this year’s USDGC. Looking back, he says he’s content with the finish in Rock Hill, South Carolina, “Sixth place is the finishing spot that leaves a lot to be desired, but also shows that you did fight and give yourself a good finish with some respectable scores. I can go back and replay the course in my head and see where I did make some mistakes and without those, I’d be at the top.”
“I’m happy with how the game plan worked out,” McMahon continued. “I only had seven bogeys on the event with many others having that many strokes on a single hole. I wish I could have cleaned up on the putting green. I was three-over-par on Hole 18 alone. If I could have birdied Hole 1 a few more times that could have helped too.”
Before getting in the practice rounds for this weekend’s Hall of Fame Classic, McMahon says he needs to recover after a grueling USDGC, “It takes a lot of focus to keep the disc inbounds and have that mindset to keep my head in it all the rounds to be the US champion. On top of that, throwing so many side arms means the whole right side of my body needs to recover. Then getting back into the tournament mindset and learn how to throw a straight shot again after not really being in the woods as we head back to the trees this weekend.”
Back to the Woods
With the wooded layout of the WR Jackson Memorial course, McMahon says he’ll be almost exclusively be reaching for the Discmania PD in both S-Line and C-Line with a few MD3s and PD2s sprinkled in.
“The PD is a great disc in the woods, especially the S-Line,” McMahon says.” I have one very beat in, one a bit more stable. Go straight, finish left. I have the C-Lines as well for a little more stability beyond that. Just like it was in Delaware. I’m looking forward to it.”
McMahon has also had his first experience with the newly released Discmania MD5 and has had a positive first impression, “I like it a lot. I’m looking forward to more time with it over the next few weeks and the off-season.”
Upcoming Tournaments
While he is penciled in for the Hall of Fame Classic and DGPT finale, McMahon will head back to Colorado, but not without stopping at the Oklahoma Open A-Tier at the end of October. He is also planning on heading to the Veteran’s Park Open in November where he hopes to defend his title from last year.
