Team Discmania Battles at 2018 Ledgestone Insurance Open

Tour / Promotions

One of the largest disc golf tournaments around gave Team Discmania all they could handle at the 2018 Ledgestone Insurance Open. The second to last stop on the Disc Golf Pro Tour showed its teeth and gave seven members of Team Discmania quite the challenge.

While the final results were not ideal, many are still in great shape in the DGPT standings with just one event remaining before the Tour Championship.

Perkins Rallies in Final Round

The Lake Eureka course in Pekin, Illinois proved tough for many competitors throughout the tournament. In a sport measured by feet, inches proved important with all the natural and artificial out-of-bounds areas throughout the course. Mistakes are magnified on every hole.

After a slow start, Nate Perkins improved each and every round until his 57 (-6) in the final round on Sunday helped him climb the leaderboard. Perkins birdied seven of the final 10 holes to finish in a tie for 28th.

The finished helped Perkins in the DGPT standings as he currently sits 13th with nearly a 40 point advantage over his next closest competitor. If Perkins is able to finish in the top 16, he’ll clinch at least a bye to the quarterfinals of the Tour Championship.

Discmania has Five In DGPT’s Top 32

With just the MVP Open remaining on the DGPT’s schedule, the standings for the Tour Championship are starting to take shape.

The top 32 disc golfers qualify for the event and Team Discmania has five currently sitting in qualifying position.

Simon Lizotte has only competed in two DGPT events where he picked up the win at the Memorial a and finished in a tie for fourth in San Francisco. Those results are good enough to put him in a tie for 22nd.

A few spots above in a tie for 19th is Colten Montgomery. A strong finish at the MVP Open can easily see Montgomery make a play at the top 16.

Places 9-16 gain a bye into the quarterfinals and currently Perkins (13th) and Grady Shue (10th) currently sit in that comfortable position. Both are in prime positions to improve their standings with solid play at the MVP Open.

Finally, Eagle McMahon is in sixth place and looking at a bye to the semifinals. Having not played in the last three DGPT events, McMahon’s trio of second place finishes are helping him in the standings.

The MVP Open begins August 24 in Leicester, Massachusetts.
