Introducing the Shady Rest DiscGolfPark

Disc Life

A small mountain town tucked up in the high sierras in home to Shady Rest DiscGolfPark, our latest installation.

Mammoth Lakes, California, well known for being a famous winter sports destination, has endless outdoor activities throughout the mountain valley. Located just an hour south of one of the most epic places on the planet, Yosemite National Park, this cozy little town of around 8,200 people offers a little bit of everything for those seeking adventure or a fun, new disc golf course to explore.

The Shady Rest DiscGolfPark within Shady Rest Park is located in the beautiful Inyo National Forest surrounding the entire Mammoth Lakes valley. This is the first DiscGolfPark and one of the few disc golf courses located within a US National Forest. It’s also the fourth DiscGolfPark in California and the 18th DiscGolfPark in the United States.

This pro level course designed by 2009 Disc Golf World Champion Avery Jenkins, plays throughout the heavily wooded forest with both long and short basket locations (short teepad locations are scheduled to be installed in Spring 2021). The challenge course including four par 4’s and one par 5 for an overall par 60 in the long-to-long layout. It is mostly flat terrain at 7,880 ft elevation with a beautiful landscape throughout the vibrant pine forest with a few of the holes providing spectacular mountain views. The highly visible DiscGolfPark baskets can be seen from a majority of the teepads, even on some of the longer holes.

The idea behind having a professional course in Mammoth Lakes was brought to the attention of Parks & Recreation by local disc golfer, Mike Wellwood, “My role was the ‘squeaky wheel.’ I had no experience in getting a disc golf course approved and installed. Many had started the process in the past, but with no success. Fortunately, I had a ton of help and guidance from my community, including the Town of Mammoth Lakes, Mammoth Recreation, and the U.S. Forest Service. Many local businesses and community members also showed their support.”

Mammoth Lakes Park & Rec Director, Stuart Brown added “Every project needs a champion and the Mammoth Lakes Disc Golf Club were tenacious. Once the project gained momentum, we worked together with Town and Forest Service staff, the Recreation Commission, Mammoth Lakes Recreation, and community stakeholders to formalize the project, acquire funding, draft the necessary permits, and obtain the required resources that ultimately led to the successful approval of the project by the Inyo National Forest.”

Both Wellwood and Brown are thrilled with the end results of the course and what it provides the community.

“I am blown away by how well the course turned out. It has really exceeded my expectations,” says Wellwood.

Brown feels that this course will provide something truly special, “Avery and DiscGolfPark were terrific to work with as they truly cared and were deeply committed to creating a quality recreation amenity that will establish Mammoth Lakes as one of the great disc golf destinations in California!”

Thanks to the Shady Rest Park Maintenance staff, Mammoth Lakes Trail System Trail Crew and volunteers from Mammoth Disc Golf Club for getting this course installed. Special Thanks to the Town of Mammoth Lakes, Park & Rec, Stuart Brown (Park & Rec Director) , Warren Boling (Parks Manager), Mike Wellwood, and Mammoth Lakes Disc Golf Club.
